 AGILITY

Benefits of Agility
Excerpt from article about agility by Sue Sternberg

Included in agility training is every basic training skill minus walking nicely on a leash. In fact, agility training is all about off-lead control, recalls, sits, downs, stays, attention and leadership. Every important behavior is embedded within an agility class. Plus, as an added bonus, agility teaches dogs to respond to their handlers: -during arousal and excitement -on-leash or off-leash -in the company of other dogs And agility offers: -physical as well as mental stimulation and exercise -the handler’s ongoing pursuit of attaining clearer and timelier non-verbal cues -a concentrated forum for practicing gentle, non- confrontational leadership skills, as dogs cannot do agility without following the cues from their handlers.

Canis Sapiens Agility Classes

Our goals for our agility classes:

No dog becomes afraid of equipment because of our training methods.
Both dogs and handlers get better at running agility courses.
Handlers get better at handling:
dogs that bark and lunge at other dogs,
dogs that take off and run around in circles occasionally doing an obstacle (zoomies)
dogs that take off and search for food or try to visit other dogs/people

Dogs get better at ignoring/not being:
dogs that bark and lunge at other dogs,
dogs that take off and run around in circles occsaionally doing an obstacle (zoomies)
dogs that take off and search for food or try to visit other dogs

We give you the skills to compete if you would like to do so, Karen, our instructor, recently got a novice fast (NF) title in with one of her dogs. However we do not encourage you to compete until we think you and your dog are ready because we think competing before both of you are ready can lead to:
dog health problems (jumping at higher heights than you have trained)
fear of equipment
discouraged humans
